Finals Tips: Combating Writer's Block and Fighting Stage Fright ...

It?s the season for Final Exams! Surely you?ll have a paper to write or a presentation so here?s a couple of ways to fight against writer?s block and stage fright.

When you find yourself stuck writing one sentence every 30 minutes, you know you?ve got a blockage. One of the best ways to get around that is to step away and do something else. Close that Microsoft Word window and go on Facebook or Twitter, watch some YouTube, learn how to dance Gangnam Style. Do something to get your mind completely off of the paper. You need a mental reset, you need to commit mental suicide. Take your brain throw it out onto the streets and ask it to make you money in the most degrading way. But don?t worry. You?re mental state will come back to life-like a word-spitting zombie once you?ve cleansed your mind. Watching YouTube videos of the most ridiculous stuff (ridiculous stuff works best) is like a laxative for your thought process, it cleans out all the junk that?s blocking your progress. If you?re really hardcore, take a real laxative. That?ll get your mind off things!

So once you?re done with the toilet and closed out all the YouTube videos and have cleaned off the sweat from your furious Gangnam Style rendition, go back to your writing. You?ll find that this time your words will be spewing out onto the screen like a new-born calf from a momma cow?s you-know-what. Eww, slimy.

Everybody gets stage fright, everybody gets a little nervous when speaking in front of an audience. It?s worse when it counts for a good chunk of your entire grade! A lot of people get sweaty, or talk really fast and are full of adrenaline, others get red-faced like an Oompa Loompa. It?s the anticipation that gets you, the anxiety built up over time. Your body and mind are ready to explode because you want to get it over with but you have to wait your turn.

30 minutes before your time to present ?go to the bathroom? and walk off some energy. Do what artists do and yell and shout, jump up and down like you were Tom Cruise on Oprah. Run down the halls screaming ?For Narnia!? If you?re not into the crazy then perhaps you can just breathe. Take a deep breath to let your brain know that you?re still alive because honestly when people get nervous, they tend to take in less oxygen. A deep breath does wonders to calm you down, at least, until you mess up during the presentation. At that point you?ll either get really nervous again, turn into an Oompa Loompa or implode into a little ball-like creature, think of Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins but fused with Russel from the movie, Up. That would be scary but that would also be a pretty impressive presentation.
