Staten Island youth football roundup: Gators, Spartans ring up SIPWFL wins
The unbeaten Richmond Rebar Gators posted their fourth straight Staten Island Pee Wee Football League Statewide Oil Tiny Tots victory, a 32-0 decision over the Big Nose Kate?s Steelers Saturday.
Kyle Gaor (70-yard interception) ran 40 yards for a touchdown and Stephen Lardi rushed for TDs of 85 and 18 yards. Enrique Vitalone recovered a fumble and Matt Froehlich scored a safety.
Dick?s Spartans got touchdown runs from Zach McCormick (60 yards) and Christian Russo (30) to blank the Metro One Lions 20-0. Quarterback Kevin Moylan threw a 30-yard TD pass to Joe Mancino.
The Little Italy Gourmet Raiders scored a touchdown with three minutes left to nip the Firefighter Glenn Perry Chargers 7-6 in a Junior contest. William Aiello scored on a 40-yard run and John Zundritch caught the winning PAT. Antonio Strappoli scored for the Chargers.
Touchdowns by Dominick Passante, Brandon Abrams and Joseph Woodward powered the Capital Plumbing Gators to a 26-6 Midget win over the Veterinary Broncos. Najeem Spicer scored for the Broncos.

Speaking Out about Public Speaking | The Two River Times

Most high school students would recognize the plea of ?Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears,? as those immortal words from Shakespeare?s tragedy Julius Caesar. When the character of Marc Antony speaks out, he uses the power of rhetoric that so distinguished educated leaders of that era. So connected were the idea of discourse in a public forum to the idea of public advocacy and justice in the courts, that the Latin word forum ultimately gave rise to the term forensics, which today can mean both evidence used in courtrooms and,?alternately, a variety of public-speaking genres.
Today?s students no longer need to travel to the stone steps of a public forum to make their voices heard. Technology now allows them to make public statements from the confines of their own bedrooms. And with tools such as Skype, iChat, videoconferencing and YouTube, students are delivering their messages to increasingly larger audiences than ever before.
The irony of this development is that, as the opportunities for students to voice their ideas have escalated dramatically during the 21st century, public speaking programs in many schools have diminished drastically.
The ancient Romans and Greeks understood that public speaking was a powerful communication tool for effective leadership, motivation, influence and persuasion. At the highest points in these venerated civilizations, the finest education available included the study of rhetoric, which meant the composing and delivery of speeches. In fact, the Roman scholar Cicero refined the concept even further, espousing that a good public speaker required more than knowledge of his topic; he needed ethos, wit and the ability to keep his audience entertained.
Throughout the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance, public speaking, known as oratory, remained an integral part of a liberal arts education. After a decline in the 17th and 18th centuries, there was renewed interest in the art of public discourse during the 19th century. This revival made the art of oratory an increasingly important part of the curriculum in schools in the late 1800s. As a result, oratorical competitions became de rigueur in colleges, high schools and elementary schools across the land as educational institutions celebrated and promoted the forensics arts.
The value placed on oratory was evidenced at institutions of higher learning across our nation. Princeton University held numerous speech competitions, especially ones associated with patriotic events such as Washington?s birthday or other historic remembrances. At Harvard, oratory was a required and popular part of the curriculum for many years. One?s education was simply considered incomplete without it. The popularity of oratorical contests was noted in the New York Evening Post in February 1895 when an article on the subject stated that at the University of Indiana, ?oratory was more popular than sports.?
The 20th century emphasis on science and technology created an American culture that became less willing to finance programs in public speaking, and the word ?oratory? became part of our past, an old-fashioned term for a truly lost art. While many schools today no longer fund oratory as a curriculum area, a good number of schools continue to validate those critical?public speaking skills through extracurricular activities.
Forensics programs in some schools, for example, foster the growth of public speaking skills through interscholastic competitions. With the challenging budgets facing most schools today, these types of activities, if they exist at all, tend to be relegated to our high schools, leaving most elementary school students without formal training in public speaking until they reach the upper grades.
Teachers in elementary and middle school often work hard to include public-speaking opportunities for students in their classrooms, but the classical emphasis on oratory as an integral part of the educational process has ?become a thing of the past in most elementary schools.
The incongruity of this fact is obvious when we observe how many elementary and middle school students are expressing their opinions, thoughts and feelings on the Internet. ?With so many new digital platforms at their fingertips, students now have the power to have their voices heard around the world, and many educators will, hopefully, re-examine priorities regarding curriculum in the 21st century.
Students today more than ever before in history need the rhetorical skills that were once held in such high esteem in the classroom. Those 19th-century theories of elocution taught critical rhetorical skills that allowed students to form arguments and defend them, delivery skills like articulation and pacing, non-verbal communication skills like use of hands, eyes, and facial expressions, and, most of all, the ability to?connect with one?s audience through ethos.
We have given our students the tools needed to talk to others around the world through technology. Creating a curriculum for ?digital? oratory would now help students develop the forensics skills they need to use these new platforms to their best ability.
If Shakespeare were writing Julius Caesar today, he might very well have said, ?Friends, Romans, citizens of the world, lend me your ears.? Students in the 21st century are part of the global classroom and teaching them how to express their thoughts effectively through public speaking programs is now, more than ever before, part of our charge as their mentors.

Preemies' brains reap long-term benefits from Kangaroo Mother Care
ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2012) ? Kangaroo Mother Care -- a technique in which a breastfed premature infant remains in skin-to-skin contact with the parent's chest rather than being placed in an incubator -- has lasting positive impact on brain development, revealed Universit? Laval researchers in the October issue of Acta Paediatrica. Very premature infants who benefited from this technique had better brain functioning in adolescence -- comparable to that of adolescents born at term -- than did premature infants placed in incubators.
Earlier research showed that infants born prior to the 33rd week of pregnancy experienced more cognitive and behavioral problems during childhood and adolescence. Universit? Laval researchers Cyril Schneider and R?jean Tessier, of the Department of Rehabilitation in the Faculty of Medicine and of the School of Psychology, respectively, and their Colombian colleagues Nathalie Charpak (Kangaroo Foundation) and Juan Ruiz-Pel?ez (Universidad Javeriana) wanted to determine if Kangaroo Mother Care could prevent these problems. To that end they compared, at age 15, 18 premature infants kept in incubators, 21 premature infants held in Kangaroo contact for an average of 29 days, and 9 term infants.
To assess participants' brain functions, the researchers used transcranial magnetic stimulation. With this non-invasive and painless technique they could activate brain cells in targeted areas, namely the primary motor cortex that controls muscles. By measuring muscle responses to the stimulation, they were able to assess brain functions such as the level of brain excitability and inhibition, cell synchronization, neural conduction speed, and coordination between the two cerebral hemispheres.
The data collected by the researchers indicate that all brain functions of the adolescent Kangaroo group were comparable to those of the term infant group. On the other hand, premature infants placed in incubators significantly deviated from the other two groups 15 years after their birth.
"Thanks to Kangaroo Mother Care, infants benefited from nervous system stimulation -- the sound of the parent's heart and the warmth of their body -- during a critical period for the development of neural connections between the cerebral hemispheres. This promoted immediate and future brain development," suggests neurophysiologist Cyril Schneider.
Psychology researcher R?jean Tessier notes that "infants in incubators also receive a lot of stimulation, but often the stimulation is too intense and stressful for the brain capacity of the very premature. The Kangaroo Mother Care reproduces the natural conditions of the intrauterine environment in which the infants would have developed had they not been born premature. These beneficial effects on the brain are in evidence at least until adolescence and perhaps beyond."
The two researchers, who are also associated with the Centre de recherche du CHU de Qu?bec, will have the opportunity to shed more light on this subject. The Government of Canada, through its Grand Challenges Canada program, Saving Brains, just awarded their research team a $1 million grant to measure the neurological, cognitive, and psychosocial benefits of Kangaroo Mother Care in a group of 400 young adults, aged 18 to 20, who were born premature.

Doritos Super Bowl contest teams with Michael Bay
NEW YORK (AP) ? Doritos is upping the prize for its annual "Crash the Super Bowl" contest, bringing in Michael Bay, a big name movie director who is no stranger to crashes himself.
The Frito Lay snack chip brand's seventh annual contest allows viewers to submit their own Doritos commercials. Fans vote on their favorites to appear during the big game.
If the ads score well on the USA Today Ad Meter, which measures the popularity of Super Bowl commercials, contestants win cash prizes of up to $1 million. But this time, winners will also get the chance to work with Bay, known for such films as "Transformers, "Pearl Harbor" and "Armageddon," on the next "Transformers movie."
"We realized entrants sometimes want a shot at breaking into the entertainment industry more than the $1 million prize giveaway," said Ram Krishnan, vice president of marketing, Frito-Lay North America, which is owned by PepsiCo Inc. "So we're giving them that chance by working on the next 'Transformers' move."
The winner's role in the making of the "Transformers" movie will depend on where his or her interest lies.
Another change: Doritos will debut a Facebook app that will let anyone volunteer to help others create an ad. Users of the ad can donate their time, props, or locations to help make the ad.
"Consumers told us 'I would love to participate but I have no interest or the talent to make a video,'" said Krishnan. "The app lets anyone pitch in."
There were 6,100 entrants last year, up from 4,500 the year before. Krishnan expects even more this year.
The Super Bowl will be played Feb. 3 in New Orleans and will be broadcast by CBS.
People can submit ads for the contest between Oct. 8 and Nov. 16 at www.facebook.com/DoritosUSA. Five finalist ads will be announced in January and consumers will then be able to vote for their favorite online.
The Super Bowl is advertising's largest showcase. The National Football League's championship game garnered an estimated 111.3 million viewers when it aired last February, according to Nielsen

AT&T under fire for FaceTime pay policy

A group of public interest organizations are preparing a complaint against AT&T for violating net neutrality rules by blocking access to a video-conferencing application.
In a letter to AT&T, three groups ? Free Press, Public Knowledge and the New America Foundation's Open Technology Institute ? assert that the telecommunications giant is running afoul of Federal Communications Commission regulations by charging a premium for access to FaceTime, an Apple program available on iOS devices. FaceTime is free via Wi-Fi, but with iOS 6, due out this week, it can be used over a cellular carrier's network.
"We respectfully request that AT&T reconsider its behavior and the impact that blocking FaceTime will have on its customers, particularly the deaf and hard of hearing, as well as all who use this application to communicate with family and friends over the Internet," the letter reads.
"Making mobile use of the application available only to those customers who pay for unlimited voice and text messages harms individuals and innovation alike."
Spokesmen for AT&T did not respond to request for comment.
Under the FCC's guidelines, the subject of any complaint must be notified 10 days before a complaint is filed. If the public interest groups cannot convince AT&T to come to a resolution, the complaint will either be heard by the FCC's enforcement bureau or along to an administrative law judge, John Bergmayer, senior staff attorney at Public Knowledge told TheWrap.
Bergmayer said that unlike Sprint and Verizon, AT&T does not allow iPhone users to access FaceTime over cellular?unless they subscribe to one of its "Mobile Sharing" plans. He said that violates open Internet rules that prohibit companies from blocking these types of applications on their mobile networks.
"There's really no factual dispute about what AT&T is doing, we just have to see if they agree their behavior is against the open internet rule," Bergmayer said.
Bergmayer said a resolution could come anywhere between 45 days and several months.

Gigalopolises: Urban Land Area May Triple by 2030
Suburbs, slums and city centers may grow by more than a million square kilometers?much of it now home to wildlife
URBAN GROWTH: If present trends continue, urban areas may triple in size--much as Las Vegas grew over the last several decades as evidenced by these satellite photos.

More than half of the world's expected nine billion people will live in giant urban expanses by 2030 as cities and their hinterlands occupy an additional 1.2 million square kilometers, thereby tripling in size. That's an additional 1.35 billion people living in cities, suggesting that urban areas that currently occupy roughly 3 percent of the planet's surface will continue to expand. By comparison, urban areas increased by just 58,000 square kilometers between 1970 and 2000.
In new work published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, urban environment researcher Karen Seto of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and her colleagues first divided the global land area into discrete parcels and, using predicted gross domestic product growth, population growth and urban land area cover in 2000, they projected which parcels had a high or low probability of succumbing to citification over the next few decades. Using that model, 1.2 million square kilometers of land have probabilities higher than 75 percent of becoming citified and nearly six million square kilometers have some probability of going urban.
"More than half of the urban land cover on the planet by 2030 has yet to be built," Seto explains. "The expansion of urban areas will have a direct impact on biodiversity hot spots."
Fifty-five percent of that expansion would come from massive urbanization in India and China?a trend that has been growing in recent decades. For example, a megalopolis similar to the urban corridor between Boston and Washington, D.C., in the U.S. is likely to form between Hangzhou and Shenyang in China. But the fastest urbanization is predicted to occur in newly developing regions in Africa, such as the coast of west Africa along the Gulf of Guinea and the shores of Lake Victoria farther south, encompassing Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, among other regions.
This may be bad news, in some cases, for the rich array of plants, animals and microscopic life that also inhabit Earth. The Eastern Afromontane, Guinean forests of west Africa and Western Ghats of India, along with Sri Lanka, are all home to such biodiversity?as well as projected to undergo rapid urban expansion that will encroach on the territory of already endangered amphibians, birds and mammals. Seto and her colleagues project the worst impacts of urban growth to occur in Central and South America.
In addition, such land use change is likely to result in even more of the greenhouse gas emissions that drive climate change, according to the new analysis. An estimated 1.38 billion metric tons of carbon could be released as forest transforms to roads, buildings and homes. As it stands, the world's cities bear responsibility for at least 70 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions. "We need to be more deliberate as a society about how we want urban places to become what they serve for humanity," Seto argues. "Too often, urban expansion is haphazard."
This is not just bad news for animals or the atmosphere, of course. Haphazard urbanization can also ill serve human inhabitants cut off from supplies of clean water or food. And the impact of urbanites is not confined to city limits; a typical Australian from Melbourne or Sydney requires greenhouse gas emissions, water diversion and land use from the entire continent. "Cities have always relied on their hinterlands and other distal places for resources from food and fuel to waste assimilation," the researchers wrote.

It's also got a large three-inch display on the rear and is capable of full HD video.
The cheaper V-Lux 40 features a similar all-black build with red logo in a smaller form, with a 1/2.33-inch CMOS sensor. On the rear of the camera, you'll find a three-inch touch display with the same bright resolution as the D-Lux 6. The camera, which bears a striking resemblance to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20, can also do 1080p video. The V-Lux is available now here in Europe for €590 and the D-Lux is coming soon, priced at €699.
