Emerging vector-borne diseases create new public health challenges

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? West Nile virus, Lyme disease, dengue fever, and plague are examples of "vector-borne zoonotic diseases," caused by pathogens that naturally infect wildlife and are transmitted to humans by vectors such as mosquitoes or ticks.

According to Marm Kilpatrick, who studies the ecology of infectious diseases at the University of California, Santa Cruz, a broad range of human activities can affect the spread of zoonotic diseases. In an article in the December 1 issue of the British medical journal Lancet, Kilpatrick and coauthor Sarah Randolph of the University of Oxford describe how widespread land-use change, globalization of trade and travel, and social upheaval are driving the emergence of zoonotic vector-borne diseases around the world. The article is part of a special series of papers focused on emerging zoonotic diseases.

"This collection of papers offers a bridge between ecologists and clinicians whose combined efforts are needed to address the ongoing challenges of emerging zoonotic diseases," said Kilpatrick, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UC Santa Cruz.

Emerging infectious diseases can be roughly split between introduced and locally emerging diseases. Introduced diseases arise from the spread of a pathogen to a new location, as when West Nile virus arrived in New York in 1999 and subsequently spread across North America. Locally emerging diseases increase in importance in areas where they are endemic, as with Lyme disease in the United States over the past three decades. These two types of emerging diseases can differ markedly with respect to infection dynamics, or the number of cases over time, Kilpatrick said.

"Introduced diseases often cause a big spike in infections and then decrease substantially. Locally emerging diseases often show a steady, sustained increase," he said.

The movement of pathogens by global trade and travel results in the emergence of diseases in new regions. Once established, introduced pathogens often evolve to take advantage of their new environment, including new hosts and vectors. With so much of the landscape shaped by human activities, pathogens may thrive by infecting hosts and vectors that do well in humanmade environments.

"Increasing human population and the urbanization and agricultural intensification of landscapes puts strong selective pressure on vector-borne pathogens to infect humans and be transmitted by vectors and hosts that live around humans," Kilpatrick said.

Emergence of endemic vector-borne diseases can result from changes in land use, such as expansion of people into new habitats, or environmental changes affecting the wild animals that serve as natural hosts or the insect vectors that spread the disease to humans. Although vector-borne diseases are highly sensitive to climate, climate change does not appear to be a major driving force behind emerging diseases, the authors said.

"So far, climate change has been a relatively minor player compared to land use and socioeconomic factors in the emergence of vector-borne disease," Kilpatrick said.

Social and economic changes, ranging from economic downturns to displacement of populations by armed conflict, frequently precipitate disease outbreaks through their impacts on public health systems, sanitation systems, behavioral patterns, and uses of natural environmental resources. One example cited in the article is a large upsurge of tick-borne encephalitis after an economic downturn in eastern Europe resulted in more people harvesting food from forests.

The incidence of any vector-borne disease involves a complex interplay of multiple factors affecting animal hosts, vectors, and people. Kilpatrick and Randolph emphasize that control of these diseases requires combined efforts by clinicians and public health officials to treat patients, promote behavior likely to minimize the risk of infection, and advise on efforts to reverse the ecological drivers of transmission through vector control, urban planning, and ecological restoration.

Publication of the Lancet series coincides with an Institute of Medicine (IOM) symposium on Emerging Infections, Microbial Threats to Health, and the Microbiome, December 11-12 in Washington, D.C. The symposium marks the 20th anniversary of an influential 1992 IOM report on emerging diseases.

"Humans are altering the environment and moving themselves and other organisms around the globe at an ever-increasing pace," said Sam Scheiner, program director for the Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases program at the National Science Foundation (NSF), a joint effort with the National Institutes of Health (NIH). "That has led to a growing disease threat. These papers show how and why that's happening, and what we need to know to ease the disease burden."

124 participants in 31 SUVs en route to India via eight ASEAN ...

31 Mahindra XUV 500's ferrying 124 participants including six men and two women from Singapore were flagged off by Foreign Minister K.Shanmugam at the F1 pit building yesterday as they started their journey to the Indian capital of New Delhi.

The ASEAN-India car rally will journey through eight ASEAN countries and enter India via the North-Eastern state of Assam - before ending the journey in New Delhi on the 20th of December with a flag down by the leaders of ASEAN member states and India. The timing of the event comes as both regions commemorate 20 years of bilateral ties between India and the ASEAN region.

The journey started in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on Monday and ended 170km later in Surkatara before the participants were flown to Singapore for an official flag off. The 22-day journey will see the 33 cars convoy commuting through a variety of terrains including mountains, flatlands and coastal areas via Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. Through the journey the participants will also visit key places of interests like the historic Borobudur temple in Indonesia.

Nearly 300 guests were at the flagging off event yesterday including students from the global Indian international school. The Singapore team is led by Mr Leslie Chang, 49, General Secretary of the Singapore Motor Sports Association.

Typing is dead ? long live writing | canada.com

By: Ben Macintyre

LONDON ? As the last British typewriter rolls off the assembly line, it is worth recalling the astonishment that accompanied the first one, patented in 1714: ?An artificial machine or method for impressing or transcribing of letters, one after another, so neat and exact as not to be distinguished from print.?

When the typewriter arrived in general use in the 1860s, many feared that this new-fangled contraption would lead to a decline in literacy. Precisely the same fears were expressed in the 1980s, when the typewriter gave way to the word processor and personal computer.

Today, as voice-activated writing takes the place of keyboard and mouse, we are on the cusp of another written revolution.

Making notes on the train in preparation for this column, I simply dictated to Siri, the voice-activated personal assistant inside my iPhone, who took it all down word for word. One day most writing may be done this way, not by pressing buttons but through speech, spoken words translated into written words by instant voice-to-text technology.

Once again, there are fears that this new machine will degrade the nature of writing, and thus the quality of thinking.

Once again, those fears will prove groundless.

What we write with, and on, shapes the way we think, whether it be quill and parchment, QWERTY keyboard or touch-screen text message.

?Our writing tools are working on our thoughts,? wrote Friedrich Nietzsche, who penned some of his most celebrated aphorisms on the first commercially produced typewriter, the Hansen Writing Ball. Nietzsche thought the machine would help him to write faster (which it did) and stave off his incipient madness with its regular tapping (which it didn?t).

Every new shift in writing technology has been greeted with skepticism and nostalgia for the old methods. Even writing itself, the oldest information technology of all, was considered by some to be a dangerous departure from the oral tradition of communication. Socrates feared that the written word had made humanity less intelligent, as the act of reading had replaced the active effort of remembering.

Plato wrote that the ideal method of learning was not to be found in books, but in lively discussion between skilful speakers, able to defend and adapt their arguments. Written words, he worried, ?cannot protect or defend themselves.?

The invention of the printing press and the typewriter provoked similar anxieties, a feeling that if writing and reading became too easy and widespread then knowledge itself would be degraded.

?My two fingers on a typewriter have never connected with my brain,? said writer Graham Greene. ?My hand on a pen does. A fountain pen, of course.? Martin Heidegger feared that ?mechanical writing? would remove the ?particular closeness? of hand-written prose reflecting a writer?s personality: ?The typewriter makes everyone look the same.?

Each new writing method brought critics.

In later life, Henry James began dictating his novels to a typist, which some connect to the more tangled and wordy style of his later works (the change is said to occur about halfway through What Maisie Knew).

Iris Murdoch wrote every one of her 24 novels in longhand, and dismissed the word processor as a ?glass square which separates one from one?s thoughts and gives them a premature air of completeness.?

After Jack Kerouac famously hammered out On the Road on a single 40-metre-long roll of paper at 100 words a minute in under two weeks on his Underwood portable, Truman Capote sneered: ?That?s not writing, it?s typing.?

Writers tend to fetishize their tools, as if the older the technology, the more honest the prose: Cormac McCarthy with his Olivetti Lettera 32; Beryl Bainbridge and her 1980s Amstrad; Ernest Hemingway and his Royal Quiet DeLuxe. (?There is nothing to writing: All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed,? growled Hemingway, just in case anyone though ?DeLuxe? meant ?easy.?)

I look back on my earlier writing tools with nothing but horror, and gratitude that they are gone: the knuckle-breaking typewriters at journalism school, the Tandy with a shimmering-green screen and a battery life of about 20 minutes, the early floppy-disk word processor that ate half a book.

Yet the strange notion that the older, slower, supposedly harder methods of writing are intrinsically more valuable lingers on in our culture. When a newspaper wishes to indicate literary authenticity, we use the font Typeka, which mimics the blotchy letters of the typewriter age.

Handwriters disdained typists; typists disparaged users of computers and word processors; and now, once again, there are fears that new technology that can translate spoken words into text will undermine writing.

If composing a text is as easy as talking, will we write in extemporized, casual slang? When instant computerized dictation is the norm, will the reflective pause between thought and word disappear altogether? As Capote might have put it: ?That?s not writing, it?s prattling.?

With historical hindsight, every revolution in writing technology has enriched the value of words. The typewriter did not induce arthritis of the fingers, general intellectual lassitude and the breakdown of family morals because women got jobs as typists and clerks; instead the invention of this magical machine accelerated the spread of literacy and made the transformative experience of writing available to all. The digital revolution has transformed our relationship with writing, creating a Twitter, text and email world of words.

For most of human existence, the spoken word was the only method of communication. Today we principally communicate by writing, digitally and instantly.

The arrival of computerized dictation technologies will lead to a hybrid of speaking and writing that may actually improve our understanding of words by returning closer to the Platonic ideal of communication. If the writers of the future must think and speak before they write, then they may become more articulate, and therefore better writers. If the form of the written word is dictated by the spoken word, we may begin to think harder before we open our mouths.

Socrates would have preferred the iPhone to the typewriter.

Tar Sands Pipelines as Bottle-necks against the Consolidation of Power in Canada

This post has not been reviewed by the Coop M?dia de Montr?al editorial committee.

by anonymous

Also posted by rfvtgb yhnujm:

Perhaps more than at any other time in its history, the Canadian state has invested its future in a single massive industrial project. The Tar Sands (1) is increasingly the driver of Canada's economy, a symbol of its national identity, and central to how it seeks to position itself globally in the future. As pipeline projects advance across the continent, there is a pressing need for us to understand how, in opposing the transportation of Tar Sands oil, we have an unparalleled opportunity to disrupt the capitalist political system in this country. This is especially important in Ontario, where presently the movement against the pipelines is weakest.

Up to now, the Tar Sands oil has been largely landlocked and its price is suppressed by the glut of supply this has created in the markets that can access it. The elites in Canada see this inability to access broader markets as hurting their profits, which in turn reduces their ability to reinvest in expanding the Tar Sands. From the perspective of the powerful, Tar Sands oil must have access to ports in order for the project to expand. The Canadian government has also been finalizing free-trade deals with China and the European Union, so the buyers are lined up once the oil is available.

Opposition to the extraction and transportation of Tar Sands oil has largely been seen as an environmental issue, with an emphasis on climate change and carbon emissions. Sustained resistance by Indigenous communities has made the issues of Indigenous sovreignty impossible to ignore in the Athabasca basing and in the regions crossed by the pipelines. In the past year, struggles against Tar Sands pipelines have intensified across the Canada and the United States, and more reasons for opposing the Tar Sands have blossomed with each new community in struggle.

The Tar Sands is not just an environmental issue though, and it does not just affect the areas around its pipelines. The Tar Sands is increasingly central to how power exists in the Canadian territory. The current push to build pipelines is a crucial moment for both the financial and political systems, and for the movements that oppose them.

I don't want to be another voice claiming that one issue is the centre piece of the system of domination. However, this escalation in the movement and production of Tar Sands oil is very real and current, and it has links in almost every part of Canadian society. Here are a few examples:

?

  • Austerity cuts to social programs are made with the same stroke of the pen that removes environmental oversight from pipeline projects and that sends massive subsidies and incentives to oil and pipeline companies. (2)

  • The government prepares for the fallout of scrapping social programs by expanding the prison system (3). Those most affected by prison will continue to be Indigenous communities and people of colour, and these communities will also continue to bear the brunt of the toxicity associated with oil refining and manufacturing related to Tar Sands production. A company owned by an Enbridge executive has already received a contract to build a new prison in Nova Scotia following the passage of Bill C-10, the crime bill (4).

  • Currently, about ten thousand men from Atlantic Provinces are employed in the Tar Sands (5), being coerced through economic necessity to spend their lives in boom towns like Fort McMurray, in an atmosphere dominated by drug addiction, organized crime, and sexual violence. These social problems then travel back home with them.

  • Currently, there are several pipelines (including the Pacific Trails (6)) being built to supply the insatiable Tar Sands with natural gas. However, some industry estimates still say that even with this added supply, they'll be out of gas there in less than thirty years. The state intends to respond to this by building as many as twelve nuclear power plants. This waste will likely be stored on the shores of Lake Huron (7), and this escalation of nuclear power will likely fuel a new phase of nuclear armament as powerful countries vie for dwindling resources.

  • The rhetoric of Canadian oil for Canadian consumers is preparing for a global future of ever increasing inequality. Alongside assuring its ?have? status, Canada is moving to secure its borders, restricting freedom of movement and cracking down on migrants. The constitution of a national identity around privileged access to to a decisive energy resource is inseperable from xenophobic, racist policies.

  • Other areas in Canada are undergoing a boom in destructive extractive industries, particularly in the north. The Ring of Fire (8) developments in Ontario and le Plan Nord (9) in Quebec are two important examples. Financially and politically, these projects are deeply tied to the Tar Sands. It is only by maintaining privileged access to oil for industry that the Canadian state can envision these projects being at all viable over the long time frames imagined for them.

  • Most of the factors discussed above affect Indigenous people disproportionately, because of the long-standing racist, colonial stratification of Canadian society. Native people who resist the Tar Sands and other incursions on their land and sovreignty are increasingly being treated as terrorists by the state, with huge amounts of intelligence resources dedicated to disrupting and suppressing their movements (10).

So if we recognize that the Tar Sands is a vital chokepoint for the political, economic, and industrial systems in this country, how do we position ourselves against it?

A key strategic principle is to bring decisive force to bear against your enemy at critical times and places. For those of us who see the Canadian state and economy as our enemies, the Tar Sands pipelines are critical places, and the moment to move against them is while they are being built or repurposed. This work is being done now and over the next couple of years. We will only have one such opportunity to stop this oil from reaching ports.

Three main paths for Tar Sands oil are actively being pursued at this time. The western path is known as the Northern Gateway and would see this dirty, toxic sludge transported across the Rocky Mountains, across the headwaters of countless rivers and streams, through the unceded territory of several Indigenous nations, to reach a port in one of the world's most hazardous waterways. To the south, the oil would travel down the Keystone XL pipeline, crossing ecologically sensitive regions everywhere along its route and disposessing hundreds of people of their land.

Both the western and southern paths have encountered massive resistance, especially from Indigenous Peoples. In particular, the Yinka-Dene alliance forms an unbroken wall of Indigenous nations blocking access of Tar Sands oil to the Canadian Pacific coast. Opposition to the Northern Gateway is so strong that even the opportunistic provincial government of British Columbia has jumped on the bandwagon to oppose the federal government's plan.

Another important strategic truth is that ?an attacker willing to pay the price can always penetrate the strongest defenses.? But ?defense is the stronger form of combat? and on the west coast, the defensive mobilization is already formidable, and even the arrogant, colonial federal conservative government would hesitate to provoke such an enormous confrontation with Indigenous nations.

The sheer monstrous ridiculousness of the Northern Gateway has made the third option for moving Tar Sands oil, the eastern path, seem so reasonable by comparison that every liberal organization in the country ? from the NDP to the Toronto Star ? is rushing to support it.

The reversal of Enbridge's Line 9 pipeline through Ontario is by far the least politically expensive and logistically simplest of the three routes for Tar Sands oil. It just involves reversing existing pipelines from Sarnia to Hamilton then on to Montreal. From there, another pipeline could be reversed to carry the oil to Portland, Maine where it would have easier access to Atlantic ports. A plan identical to the current Line 9 reversals was proposed back in 2008, but was withdrawn after the economic collapse and in the face of heated opposition.

We need to stop the movement of Tar Sands oil no matter what route it takes. Though we might argue about the risks of a spill to a particular sensitive area to gain local support, it doesn't matter if it's crossing pristine mountain streams or Hamilton Harbour. The Tar Sands is an ecological and social nightmare that benefits only the elites, and it's going to get worse if its market is allowed to expand.

Tar Sands oil is coming East. To all the anarchists, radical environmentalists, and militants of any sort along the Line 9 route: we have a golden opportunity to prevent the state and capitalists from further consolidating their power. Enbridge intends Line 9 to be fully ready for Tar Sands oil by the Spring of 2014, so our time frame is tight. There will not be very many easy sites of intervention (like construction projects, for instance) so we need to be ready in our home communities to act quickly when these chances present themselves.

Global High Fructose Corn Syrup Use May Be Fueling Diabetes Increase

It doesn't matter where you look: the U.S., Mexico, Malaysia or Portugal, the more high fructose corn syrup consumption, on average, the more diabetes. A new study of 43 countries in Global Public Health, published online November 27, found that adult type-2 diabetes is 20 percent higher in countries that consume large quantities of high fructose corn syrup. "The study adds to a growing body of scientific literature that indicates HFCS consumption may result in negative health consequences distinct from and more deleterious than natural sugar," Michael Goran, of the University of Southern California Department of Preventive Medicine and co-author of the new study, said in a prepared statement. Countries in which per person annual high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) consumption was less than 0.5 kg had similar BMIs, daily calorie intake and total sugar intake as did countries in which HFCS was higher. The big difference in these two groups of countries was diabetes prevalence. The link between HFCS and poor health outcomes--such as obesity or diabetes-has often been speculated, but it has been difficult to prove. The availability of the cheaper-than-sugar sweeteners starting in the U.S. in the 1970s appears to have helped boost the number of overall calories people imbibe. In the U.S. today, for example, high fructose corn syrup is in everything from sodas to ketchup. In fact, we each consume, on average, some 24.8 kilograms of this processed corn sweetener every year. With the extra calories, weight gain has quickened, leading to more obesity, one of the strongest risk factors for type-2 diabetes. HFCS may also pose a greater risk for diabetes greater than pure sugar alone. Instead of a composition evenly divided between fructose and glucose like table sugar, HFCS contains as much as 30 percent more fructose. (The exact quantities are unknown because manufacturers are not required to disclose the amount on food and beverage packages.) Glucose is metabolized quickly and used as energy or retained as fat. But fructose processing is more complex. It is broken down primarily in the liver and seems to induce less leptin production (a hormone that signals fullness to the body) and less insulin (which is why sweeteners composed primarily of fructose are sometimes recommended for people who already have diabetes). Some studies have also found fructose consumption increases the types of fats that are linked to insulin resistance, a hallmark of diabetes. These scattered findings suggest that "our metabolism has not evolved sufficiently to be able to process the fructose from high fructose corn syrup in the quantities that some people are consuming it," Stanly Ulijaszek, of the University of Oxford and study co-author, said in a prepared statement. Some illuminating international differences emerged during the course of the study. For example, the European Union imposes production quotas for HFCS for member countries. Those countries, such as Sweden, that do not use the sweetener in their own food supply can export it to countries, such as Hungary, that are willing to buy more for residents. This distribution imbalance allowed the researchers to compare countries that were similar in other respects (BMI, gross national product, etc.) but different in HFCS consumption. While the U.S. is the largest producer--and consumer--of HFCS and has been for decades (thanks in large part to farm subsidies), other countries are just beginning to experience high amounts of HFCS in the food system. Mexico, for example, long limited imports of HFCS to protect their own sugar market. In 2008, however, those barriers were removed, and for the past few years, HFCS has been flooding in from the U.S. The authors of the study argue that with the new findings, perhaps some of these policies should be revisited. Further research into the mechanisms for the possible link between HFCS consumption and diabetes risk remains to be done. But, "if HFCS is a risk factor for diabetes--one of the world's most serious chronic diseases--then we need to rewrite national dietary guidelines and review agricultural trade policies," Tim Lobstein, director of policy at the International Association for the Study of Obesity, said in a prepared statement.

How to call, message, and email your contacts using Siri

Complete guide to Siri commands for Phone, Messages, Email, Contacts, and more

Siri isn't just another voice control system, it remembers context and it can understand relationships. That means, for example, you can tell Siri to call your wife's iPhone, and Siri will know who that is and which phone number to dial. Not only that, Siri can send iMessages or SMS, and even email any of your friends, family, or co-workers. No matter how you like to communicate, Siri makes it incredibly easy to stay in touch.

How to establish contact relationships with Siri

Siri will need to either learn who your wife, best friend, boss, or other relationships are before it can associate them with the proper contact. You can edit the Contact to enter that information, but what fun is that? The easier, faster way is simply to tell Siri what your relationships are.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri what the relationship is. For example: "Matthew Kazmucha is my brother". (Make sure you say the name exactly as it appears in your contacts.)
  3. Say Yes or tap the Yes button when Siri asks you to confirm.
  4. Siri will confirm that the relationship has been added.

This works great for unique relationships but for relatives that have simliar titles, it can be a problem. If you have two daughters for instance, you'll need to assign them a differently for Siri to differentiate between them. You can, of course, use things like "oldest daughter" or "youngest daughter".

How to manually add relationship data to Contacts

When Siri does get confused by multiple relationships, it is possible to manually add in the proper data in your Contact card so that Siri can make use of it.

  1. Launch the Contacts app (located in the Utilities folder by default) or launch the Phone app and tap on the Contacts tab.
  2. Tap on the name of the contact you want to edit.
  3. Tap the Edit button in the top right-hand corner.
  4. Tap on theRelationship Field near the bottom.
  5. Tap on the relationship type in the list.
  6. Tap the Blue arrow and choose the contact you'd like to add to that relationship.
  7. Tap the Done button in the upper right hand corner.

Siri will now remember that relationship and saying things like "Call my brother" will now cause Siri to call the contact connected tp that relationship.

Privacy warning

Any relationships you add to your Contact card are now part of that card which means that if you email or message someone your contact card, all of your relationships will be part of that information. You may want to create a second, relationship-free Contact card to share with others.

How to get contact information with Siri

Siri can quickly find you the Contact information for anyone on your iPhone -- far more quickly than tapping, scrolling, and visually picking them out typically allows.

  1. Press and hold down the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri who's contact information you want to see. For example: "Leanna Lofte" or "Show me Leanna Lofte's information" or "When is Leanna Lofte's birthday?"
  3. Siri will present you with the information you've requested. If you have more than one contact with the same name, Siri will just ask you to clarify which one you need information for before displaying it.

How to call a contact with Siri

Siri can place calls to someone by name, or simply by relationship, and to any phone number you have. It works especially well when driving.

  1. Press and hold the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri who you want to call. For example: "Call mom".
  3. If the contact has more than one phone number, Siri will ask you which number you want to call. If you know you want to call to someone?s work or mobile phone, you can make it faster by saying ?Call mom at work" or "Call mom's iPhone".
  4. Siri will then place the call

How to send an SMS or iMessage with Siri

Siri can quickly and conveniently compose SMS and iMessages either to a single or multiple recipients. Just like calls, it's especially useful when driving.

  1. Press and hold the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri you want to send a text message, and to make it even faster, to whom. For example: "Text Heather I'll be late for dinner" or "text mom and dad that I'm home safe".
  3. If you don't say the contact or relationship immediately, Siri will ask you for a phone number, contact name, or iMessage-associated email address.
  4. Wait for Siri to confirm the content of your text.
  5. Tell Siri to "Send" your text, or tap Yes or Send.

If you're not happy with the message, instead of confirming it, say "change it" to re-dictate it, or say "cancel" to abandon it.

How to send an email using Siri

Messaging with Siri is not limited to just sending text messages; Siri can also send emails, both to individuals and to multiple recipients.

  1. Press and hold the Home button to activate Siri.
  2. Tell Siri you want to send an email and, to save time, to whom. For example: ?Send an email to Leanna? or "Email Chris and Bobby".
  3. If the contact has more than one email address, Siri will ask you which address. If you know you are sending an email to someone?s work address, you can make it faster by saying ?Send an email to Leanna at work.?
  4. Tell Siri the subject of the email. For example: "Apps" or "Vacation plans"
  5. Tell Siri the contents of the email.
  6. Wait for Siri to confirm the content of your text.
  7. Tell Siri to "Send" your email, or tap Yes or Send.

If you're not happy with the email, instead of confirming it, say "change subject", "add", or "change message". You can also tell Siri to "cancel" to abandon the email completely.

Five-Star Match of the Week: Eddie Guerrero vs. Brock Lesnar - WWE Championship Match, No Way Out 2004

Every Wednesday, WWE Classics and Greatest Matches team up with your favorite Superstars to bring you the Five-Star Match of the Week. We ask a Superstar in the WWE locker room to select one of the greatest wrestling matches of all time, and WWE.com brings you that full-length match, uncut.

As the United States Champion, Antonio Cesaro?s Five-Star Match of the Week was no shocker.

?Eddie Guerrero vs. Brock Lesnar from No Way Out 2004,? Cesaro announced.

The main event bout, one month prior to WrestleMania XX, resulted in the crowning of Guerrero as WWE Champion. Latino Heat was one of the finest Superstars to hold the United States Title in both WCW and WWE. Perhaps seeing Guerrero win the big one speaks to the arrogant European?s own championship aspirations. (MORE EDDIE)

?I picked this match because I just saw it recently before I debuted here in WWE,? Cesaro explained. ?It?s just an awesome match. I think it might get overlooked sometimes, but that match just shows how awesome Eddie Guerrero was and how good Brock Lesnar was as well.?

Lesnar was defending the title with hopes of headlining his second consecutive WrestleMania. While the matchup of Brock and Eddie might seem like a clash of styles, the competitors put on an amazing athletic showcase. (MORE LESNAR)

?It?s so good and the story is so well told, you just get into it every single time,? the United States Champion said. ?You can see how the crowd is quiet watching it at first and by the end, everybody?s on their feet.?

With the referee incapacitated, Lesnar?s rival Goldberg inserted himself into the battle and the lying, cheating and stealing Guerrero was happy to have the help. After Goldberg?s interference, Eddie nailed his signature Frog Splash to pin the champion and win the WWE Title.

?The victory celebration of Eddie makes it at the end,? Cesaro said. ?That just puts the dot on the ?i,? as we say in Switzerland.? (MORE CESARO)
