81-year resident of San Clemente dies - The Orange County Register

San Clemente has lost one of its longest-standing residents. Marian Daneri died Monday at age 92, taking with her 81 years of memories of the seaside village that her father helped pioneer.

Born Marian Strang on Jan. 7, 1920, in Greensfield, N.M., she moved to San Clemente in 1931 at age 11 with her family and watched the town grow with her. At the time her family arrived, town founder Ole Hanson, who had mapped out San Clemente in 1925 to make it a Spanish Mediterranean-style beachfront village, was still in residence at his blufftop mansion, known today as Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens.

As daughter Cathie Roohk of Laguna Niguel said this week, Marian's father, LeRoy Strang, became mayor of San Clemente and one of the town's chief building contractors, erecting many of the early homes in the Pier Bowl area and noted landmarks such as Casino San Clemente and the San Clemente Theater (now known as the Miramar).

"Marian attended Las Palmas Elementary School and graduated from Capistrano Union High School in San Juan Capistrano in 1937," Roohk said. "During summers, she would work with her mom, Eleanor, at the cafe owned by her family, which was located on the pier where the Fisherman's restaurant is today."

At age 13, Marian met Arthur "Artie" Daneri one day when he accompanied his brother Norman to her home, Roohk said. It was love at first sight, and on June 3, 1940, at age 20, she married Daneri in Las Vegas.

They took up residence in the Eleanor Strang Apartments, which Marian's father had built for her mother on the site of what is now Park Semper Fi, a city park that overlooks the pier.

"Marian was the manager, while Artie was a patrolman for the San Clemente Police Department," Roohk recalled. "He would go on to be the chief of police from 1944 to 1958. He would eventually retire from owning Art Daneri Realty at age 84."

Art Daneri continued to be known as "Artie" or "Chief" in San Clemente until his death Oct. 14, 2007, at age 91 in a home on Calle Serena that the couple built in 1951.

Art and Marian were married 67 years. "He was the only love of her life, from age 13," Roohk said. "His death forever left a void in her life, but she continued to enjoy her family and neighbors.

"Marian loved to garden. If she wasn't enjoying her home, you could find her outside spending many delightful hours keeping weeds at bay and planting colorful flowers in every spare plot of soil available. She enjoyed painting Artie's birdhouses and garden art. Her yard was her sanctuary."

The Daneris had two children, Larry, born June 7, 1943, and Cathie, born Aug. 18, 1946. Larry died in 1977 at age 34.

During Marian's career, shoppers in downtown San Clemente could find her working for 21 years at Trudy Sellers Dress Shop on Avenida Del Mar and at The Wardrobe, as the shop was renamed after Sellers' death. "Not only did she and her sister, Barbara, live next door to each other since 1952, but they worked together at The Wardrobe," Roohk said.

During a recent 75th-anniversary celebration for Casino San Clemente, a video interview with Marian conveyed her recollections of early San Clemente, of her father building the Casino and of some dancing memories. "My mom loved to dance," Roohk said.

A celebration of Marian's life will begin at 11 a.m. Oct. 19 at Lesneski Mortuary, 640 S. El Camino Real, San Clemente. A luncheon will follow at her home.

Marian is survived by her sisters Barbara Shook of San Clemente and Edith Ellenor of San Juan Capistrano; her daughter Cathie Roohk and son-in-law David of Laguna Niguel; grandson Jon Roohk and wife Jennie of Laguna Hills; great-granddaughters Sophia Faith Roohk and Evangeline Grace Roohk and extended family members.

"Family and extended family were very important to her, and she has been blessed with many family members being close by and always a part of her life," Cathie Roohk said. "We rejoice that she is with her Lord and reunited again with her beloved Artie, son Larry, grandson Aaron and many family members that have gone before her. We hold her forever in our hearts."
